Ball screws have become indispensable in modern drive technology. They are used in clutches of trucks, in medical devices as well as in linear slides with motorised drives.

In order to ensure the service life of the spindles, prototype spindles must undergo a life test on appropriate test benches.

Product development

For these tests, one of our customers needed a universally programmable test stand that could perform millions of test cycles.

In previous years, we have already supplied 2 test stands with similar, simpler requirements. The new test stand had to be able to generate much higher forces and this at very high acceleration values, sometimes greater than 10m/s2.


Function

Pneumatic cylinders with programmable proportional valves are used for force generation. The cylinders for force generation are connected directly, without hoses, to a tank so that the dynamic pressure fluctuations can be kept as small as possible.

The test stand is equipped with sensors for measuring temperature, torque, forces, speed, rotational speed and a length measuring system for backlash measurement.

A highly dynamic servo motor from Bosch Rexroth serves as the drive system, which is coupled with various gearboxes with different ratios as required.

Labview is used for control, measured value acquisition and evaluation. LabView is also used to program the test cycle, which can vary greatly depending on the spindle to be tested. The programming environment, which was specially designed for this type of test application, offers a wide range of options for programming individual test cycles.

In a first phase, within the framework of a paid study, we develop a concept and calculate, based on the customer's specifications, variants of drive options and force generation solutions.

Based on these fundamentals and after choosing the solution to be realised, we are able to submit an offer for the production of the complete test bench.

In phase 2, after receiving the order, the solutions and calculations worked out in phase 1 are refined and implemented. The final design is worked out.

At the same time, the control architecture is created and the hardware realisation is commissioned.

As soon as this planning is complete, the Labview programming can be started.

After a final design review with the customer, the production plans are drawn up.

This is followed by the purchase of materials and production components.

The customer receives a finished product that is precisely tailored to his needs at a defined price.
